How Do I Know When I need to Talk to Someone?
Talking can be difficult, and it can be hard to know who we should talk to. It can be even hard to know if we are ready to talk to someone! Here are some signs that it might be a good idea to talk: 1. You’ve been feeling flat for a long time. There are lots of reasons why we might feel ‘flat’ or low. Sometimes this can be because we have had a lot of feelings that we have ignored, and if you ignore one feeling (sadness), you usually have to ignore all your feelings (like happiness). This can leave us feeling empty and flat. 2. You feel like you’re going to burst. Sometimes we have so many feelings, or the feelings we have are so strong, we just don’t know what to do with them. We feel like a balloon that is about to burst. This is a good sign that it is time to release that pressure and talk. 3. You’ve been thinking about hurting yourself. When we ignore our feelings for a long time, they still need to be expressed. For some people, these feelings get pushed down for so long that they start wanting to express them by physically hurting themselves. Maybe you’ve thought about (or have) cut yourself, or maybe you’ve picked a fight with someone who is much bigger than you. These are signs that your feelings need to be expressed, and finding ways to express them safely and healthily is really important. You might know of other signs that are unique to you, that tell you it’s a good time to talk to someone. Who are the people in your life that are good listeners? Your local Elder? A friend? Aunty?
