Fun Food Facts
Although some snacks like chips or chocolates my be fun to eat in the short term, if they are eaten everyday and in excess we may find that in the long term our bodies may not find them as fun! This is why it is important to put healthy food into our bodies, to ensure that our bodies stay strong and healthy as we grow older! Our bodies are like our homes, we live in them everyday, so naturally, we would only want to bring into our homes things that let us live comfortably and happily. Like our homes need constant maintenance so too, do our bodies! We need to make sure that there is a good balance with what we eat, so here are some fun food facts, according to the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating which should help you choose what to eat: There are five food groups that we should include in our balanced diet: Dairy Our bodies need dairy so that our bones have a source of calcium! This makes sure that as we grow older our bones are strong and we do not grow weak or brittle bones. Examples of dairy include: milk, cheese and yoghurt. What type of cereal would be your favourite to pair your milk with in the morning? Fruit Fruit provides our bodies with vitamins and minerals which are necessary for our bodies to stay nice and healthy; There are many types of fruit with different types of fun colours that are always fun to choose from: Green: apples, kiwi, grapes Orange: mango, peaches, apricots Red: strawberries Yellow: Banana Can you think of any other colours and fruits? Grain (cereal) foods These foods are good or our bodies because they provide important fibres, carbohydrates and protein! These foods give our bodies a balanced amount of energy. Some examples are: cereals, bread and rice. Can you pick out which foods are grain or cereal foods in your diet each day? Lean meats and poultry, fish, eggs, tofu, nuts and seeds and legumes/beans These foods provide us with protein! Protein maintain and repairs tissues in our bodies as well as keeps our muscles and organs strong. Can you think of some fun foods that include protein-packed ingredients? Vegetables Vegetables provide our bodies with important vitamins and minerals, as well as dietary fibre. Having vegetables in our diet everyday makes sure that we are having a balanced diet that may prevent our bodies from getting sick in the future. This group of foods are yet another group of foods that have fun colours to choose from! Green: Broccoli, spinach, peas. Orange: Sweet potato, pumpkin, carrots.
